Students and parents were in for pleasant surprise when this year Centralized Counseling for M-Tech 2012 (CCMT 2012) committee took initiative of going online for the M. Tech and M. Plan admission for National Institute of Technology (NITs). All 20 out of 30 NITs that offer M. Tech and M. Plan seats agreed to participate with the entire project being organized by Malviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur.
According to CCMT 2012 Chairman, Prof. I.K. Bhat "online counseling was the need of the hour. Unlike other programs, M.Tech and M. Plan counseling is more complex. Steps towards automating the complete process from e-registration, online payments to multiple rounds of e-seat allocation has ensured the resolution of many admission related issue".
He adds, "A Project which would have ordinarily required an effort of at least 8-9 months, was executed seamlessly in under 3 months by MGRM Net Limited ( a Delhi based educational e-governance technology company). Considering that this is the first time ever that an activity has been undertaken at an all India level by NITs, this is quite an achievement".
With the new system in place, student could easily opt for courses, which at one time were difficult to apply for due to location, time and communication constraints. The greatest indicator of the success of online counseling was that for 6000 seats approx. 35000 students were able to apply.
In the previous mechanism nearly 50% of the total seats used to remain vacant due to shifting of students from institution to another and due this students were finding it difficult to apply at several institutions simultaneously. With the new system the number of vacant seats have shrunk to meager 4-5% which by all standards can be treated an outstanding achievement. All the NITS have greatly appreciated this initiative and seamless execution of the same. Especially some of NITs that are remotely located, which used to find it difficult to enroll students in the PG Programs have been benefited and are appreciated of the new system.
"We were nervous, when we read about the technical snags in counseling software of IIT-JEE and the hacking of data of all India quota post-graduate medical courses counseling, but the commitment shown by the all NITS and the vendor ensured that CCMT 2012 was success" said CCMT 2012 coordinator Pro f. Vineet Sahula. Students when contacted feel that it has relieved them of the pain of running around the institutions and also of the financial burden which they used to face.
Looking at the positive impact CCMT 2012 had on M. Tech admissions, it is expected that in future the system will stabilize and provide excellent services to the student community desiring to pursue their post graduation in Engineering, Technology and Architecture.
